Chungking Express (1994, directed by Wong Kar Wai)
Here I am, still babbling on about this gorgeous film. I don’t know the slightest thing about film and cinematography (why did I do photographic and digital media for two years?) but you don’t need that kind of knowledge to appreciate beauty. We all put our own meanings into media.
Wong Faye is on the right there, with her pixie cute haircut, just pretending to look past co-star Tony Leung, when you know that he’s right there in her peripheral vision… He is simply downing his cheap black coffee, oblivious. Together, in the dirty lower ground food courts of Hong Kong that I am familiar with, it seems a sad reflection of my own (non-existent) love life. I see grittiness but I also see honesty and a poignant realism in the film.
