Choices (again)

I handed in my subject selections. Let me tell you now: I am very happy with them. When I really think about it, only I know what is going to make me happy and what isn’t going to drive me insane.

So what did I pick?

  • English Advanced - This is mandatory for everyone in my school, but I would have picked this anyway.
  • English Extension 1 - I had to take a written test for this and I found out this morning that got into a class.
  • Mathematics - I generally enjoy mathematics. Lots of people think I’m nutters for this, but I just love how there’s only one answer, there can be no debate, they’re clear cut.
  • Mathematics Extension 1 - More maths. I think this will be a bit more challenging, but I’m prepared to work for it.
  • French Continuers - French is easily my favourite subject, and I’d be an idiot if I didn’t keep doing it.
  • Music 2 - Music isn’t going to be as stressful, or as taxing as my other subjects which are all a bit textbook-y and require lots of writing etc, so I’m looking forward to this.
  • Chemistry - Probably the only science I could really stand to study. It’s a little bit like mathematics actually, if taught well, I can just understand it. If not, I’m going to have to work really hard to get through it.
  • Japanese Beginners - My school doesn’t actually offer this course, there aren’t enough people who wanted to do it, but I still do. This is why I considered doing it by correspondence. I think I can do it.

I know I picked a lot of subjects, I know I have to start changing my study habits, but I want to succeed. Not for my parents, but for me. I’m going to work hard for this, and if it means quitting my job, I’ll do it. If I have to quit piano, I will. I think I’m ready for it. Did you ever have to make some difficult decisions? How did you make them and did you have to give anything up?

i no how u feel. like once i had 2 photocopy these sheets rite but i wanted 2 buy a lasagne but so like i had 2 giv up my lasagne for my schoolwork cos i didnt hav enuff money nd stuff yeh

You could easily take physics if you wanted to. It’s all trig and calculus. The early stuff is mostly just trig and algebra.

The only thing about math is once you get to a certain point… there is no clear cut answer any more. There are debatable answers, so if you love math, I would find a new reason. I mean, you won’t ever see that kind of math in high school, but you will in college.

Looks like you made good choices, I hope you enjoy them! I chose my subjects for school this year on Friday, and I’m taking English Language, English Literature, Economics and Business, and Design Technology. I’m hoping I’ve picked the right things!

I’m glad that you’re happy with your selection! Chemistry was my worst subject overall; physics just made much more sense to me… but of course, that differs from person to person.

Is it just me or are you doing 14 units?! When only 10 is going to be counted? Are you sure you want to load yourself like that (even if they are subjects you want to do)? Keep in mind you always have the alternative to pursue beginner languages at Uni, or even TAFE. If you’re positive that you can handle all that (especially with correspondence courses) then go for it… but that’s A LOT of work right there. Each subject gets intense, though it’s always possible to drop subjects as you go through the year if that’s necessary.

God, I hate maths. It doesn’t help that I’m terrible at it, of course. That might be why I used to love French but hate it now — when I’m not perfect at something I want to give it up.

You get to choose so much more than we do! We have to do English literature, English language, maths, R.E, P.E, science (chemistry, physics, biology). Non negotiable. We’re also “heavily advised” to take a language.

    Good luck with your subjects!

MORE MATH? Eww. There was one semester I was taking Algebra II and Trig at the same time, and it was like MATH. OVERLOAD. But hey, I guess if you like it…

    Have fun this year!

Are you doing HSC stuff already o_O that was way too quick.

Wow, TWO math classes? I’m glad to hear that you enjoy it, though. ;)

I’ve never really had to make difficult choices in regards to my school classes because we’re not given a whole lot of choice until our last year in high school (which rather defeats the purpose of high school, in my opinion). As for other cases, I…generally avoid difficult decisions, either by downgrading them to unimportant decisions or being unable to recognize them as difficult. Not sure how I manage this, but it seems to happen a lot. o_O

Good luck with your classes! :)

ahh Chemistry is easy, you’ll do fine! Just need to understand the underlying concepts, apply them to some word problems, add some numbers, do some dimensional analysis and ta-da! you’re done :D

Kimmie - Well then, I guess I won’t be taking maths in uni then, will I? I don’t know. We’ll see how I go with the extension before I think about that.
Belinda - Yup, that’s fourteen units. I’ve got about six weeks to see if I can handle it and if not, I can drop some. Yeah, it’s true I only need 10 units for HSC year, but I need twelve for preliminary anyway.

Wow, they all seem pretty intense. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll do great as long as you’re putting your all in it, which it certainly seems like you are.

To answer your question, I’ve never had anything to give up in the first place, nevermind a reason to give it up, haha.

Wow. So many subjects! That scares me. :(
But I love mathematics for its clear-cutness as well.

When I took up French, I was reasonably good at it. But eventually I got it confused with Japanese and kept wanting to add “desu” to the end of every French sentence I spoke so… Gave up. :P

*gape* so many subjects! we only get to choose 6 subjects, that are taken for the full two years. *frowns* well actually we could take a 7th subject outside of school but i think that’s only for learning a foreign language. i had to pick my subjects too - Math B (extension 1), Math C (extension 2), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English. I considered doing 3 math subjects but my school doesn’t allow students to do that. you must be thinking “OMG! have you lost your MIND?!” (and i would respond “how could i possibly have lost my mind if i didn’t have one in the first place?”) well really there’s a logic to it all. you see since i’m keen on taking all these other text book-y intense subjects, having half the subjects being math means i as long as i do well in math C (extension 2), i shouldn’t really have to study for the two other subjects. in other words, less studying! (sort of) and then i considered doing ancient history instead of bio, but apparently the curriculum is extremely boring. so that’s what i handed in. and now i’m pondering if i’m going to strain myself too much. perhaps i should’ve done BMD (multimedia studies) instead of biology? BLURGh. x_x i’m going to die aren’t i?
