Criticism
I just got some criticism on a piece of work I did (my arrangement of Blake Says on Youtube by Amanda Palmer) and surprisingly I’m not freaking out about it. Honestly, I would say it leaned a little more to the “Oh my god you suck” end of the spectrum than towards the “Ok, that was bad, but here’s how can change it” end, but still, it’s not that bad. I totally understand how I would feel if someone err… butchered one of my favourite songs.
The commenter said, very adamantly that I must “NEVER DO IT AGAIN” and I think a year or two ago, I would have done the teenage angst thing, taken it all very seriously and decided not only to never play that song again, but never to sing again. Now, I just want to go play the piano and sing. Even if I have a ridiculously high pitched voice, even if I don’t sound like the person who originally sings the song, even if I’ve been classically trained, and most of all - even if it’s 2 in the morning.

I have a ridiculously high pitched voice. It means when I play Singstar I’m even higher than the likes of Whitney Houston. It’s slightly disturbing.
As it goes, I think that was a wonderful performance. When you introduced it with this post I was slightly dubious about watching it in case the person was right. But it was amazing. (Didn’t you blog about doing a performance before? I remember watching that too…)
Normally I would say listen to criticism but… I don’t think you should. :P

I don’t know the original song but I think it sounds wonderful!
My criticism is just that perhaps a tripod is in order in the future, your camera man is pretty shaky… Otherwise I think your voice is beautiful.

OMG. Is that really you?! Your voice is lovely. The fact that it’s sweet I think goes beautifully with the song (though I don’t know the original piece).
The commenter is obviously wrong. Seriously.

If they insisted that you must never to do it again, in ALLCAPS at that, I’d say they’re more than “leaning” on the negative end of the spectrum. O_o

I had no idea you could sing like that! o__o Your voice is clear and beautiful, and I didn’t get what the commenter was going on about, but you always get angry purists I guess. (seriously, if covers could only be done if you had the same voice as the original, they’d be a lot more boring.) I’m a big fan of Amanda Palmer too, and I really enjoyed your performance. *comments also* It’s a good thing that you’re being mature about it and not taking it to heart, in any case. ;)

I can’t claim to be an expert, however I DID study the piano for 3 years (complete with solfaege -is that how it’s spelled? - lessons) and I can generally spot a badly interpreted song (ah the wonders of American Idol type of shows ^_^ ).
Anyway, my take: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the intepretation. I’m going to look up the original version, as I can’t really recall it right now (but the song does sound vaguely familiar). What I found, however EXTREMELY annoying was the camera’s focus shifting so much. You should’ve just put it down somewhere on a table. It’s the sound that was important anyway.
And your voice is amazing. I wish I could pull that off. Unfortunately I always manage to somehow mess things up. :P
So congratulations! And do NOT stop doing that.

I don’t like rap. That commenter doesn’t like the way you interpret/sing that song. Everyone likes/can’t stand certain/different things. I think you’re wonderful.

Everyone, I just want to say thank you, I appreciate it so much. I couldn’t ever stop singing and playing the piano, no matter what a single person said, but you have all encouraged me :D

I think it sounds great! And you shouldn’t bother too much about what other people say (especially not when they type in all caps), no matter what you do, there will always be someone who thinks you suck… Let i go and keep on singing!

I did classical piano for 6 years (though I must mention that I hated it and still do) and I really enjoyed watching your performance, I thought it was really good.
I think I would’ve done the teenage angst thing. The commenter was really rude, she just totally judged you and acted like she knew exactly who you were. People like that just really bother me.
