Name change
So, BGS is going to expire pretty soon. Oh dear oh dear oh dear (No, this is not a plea for money). Although… It has started making me think about whether I should renew it. Questions I have been asking myself:
- Am I over the whole website thing?
- Am I over this name and the variations of it that I’ve seen around the web?
- Can I really think of something better? (Do you think I’m going to pick something like… Errr… Nevermind.)
So, while I’m thinking up answers to my own questions, I have a couple that I’d like to ask you guys.
- Do you think it’s necessary for someone to change their domain name?
- Do you find it annoying to have to change your links around? (I don’t but I guess others might…)
- Do you believe having a domain is necessary? Why shouldn’t I just have a subdomain somewhere?
- Anything else you would like to say in regards to domain names/changing them.
It’s not right for me to say that your opinions are going to be the only thing I base my decision on (It’s not even such a big deal anyway!) but I will certainly take them into consideration and it will be interesting to read what you have to say. For example, I know Becky has an article about choosing domain names, something I can’t say I read when picking this name, considering I have two hyphens and a couple of funny words. Anyway, I still have a little while to decide and even if I don’t make up my mind, I honestly don’t mind sticking with this one.

1. I don’t really mind people changing domain names. It’s THEIRS. I mean, say your domain name is SINGLE4LYFE.COM then when you do get a boyfriend, you’re obviously going to want to change it…? Or when you’ve “grown” out of it? Afterall, it’s yours. But when I say that, I don’t mean changing it every darn month — now that’s unnecessary.
2. No, not annoying. I get some typing and clicking exercises!
3. Well, domains are … more independent? More access to things, more features, etc. Sub domains are good when the user is not looking for having something *big*, like just a blog or something simple.
4. If you’re going to change it, please let it be azns-rox-mah-sox.com, okay? Thanks.

Hey, you NEVER pick up your phone, and whenever I call your home phone you’re NEVER there. E-mails? Yeah… S’ppose. And you only respond on Messenger 1 in 10 times, and half of those times it’s just to say you’re going. How much fish could a fish fisher fish if a fish fisher could fish fish? And you care more about your site than all those other methods, so this is the most reliable way to get to you.
Duudezoooooooooorz. Thee/thous domain name are euuuuuugh to type. I’m here in Hong Kong and it’s all like “Euuuuuuuugh, no bookmarks. *more manual input* Euuuooooooorgh….” And it’s like “Euuuuuuuugh….” and “So much hyphens” or “Euuuuugh….” Yeah.
I think you should get a new domain name. Because it should reflect what you like/are like currently or something of that jazz. Then again bgs doesn’t really have that applied to it cos it’s not like me having the domain uberboober.com or something dumb. Oooh, ooh http://www.ronald.com.au Geddit?? Geddit?? And no I don’t mind, you can leave it.
Domain names are easier to type than subdomains. Domain names show your own person/ality. I mean, http://www.panasonic.com/chrasy doesn’t really… well, you get the idea. Domain names can be whatever you want! (Unless it’s taken…) Domain names cost money……. but not much!
I won’t offer any suggestions because I know they’ll either be dumb or uncreative. Ultimately, despite whatever input and feedback you get, you’ll have to do the thinking in the end. Like you said it’s not really much of a deal, but it’s still important enough to consider so that you’re content with it. Well…at least until the next time it expires anyway.

.. renew it.
# Chans, 1 year, 10 months ago.
I think changing domain names can be confusing for all those people that linked you or visit you sometimes. They find you gone and don’t know what happened.
I suppose one doesn’t need a domain name, it’s just a lot easier to remember for most people (if they don’t want to bookmark it that is).
Changing domain names, or going for a sub domain is something that’s, in my opinion, entirely up to you. You know your regulars will find you elsewhere too and those who care will change their links etc, so that’s probably not so much of a problem. It’s just that for me BGS = Tracey
# Bryce, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Don’t change the domain, think about all the people who linked to you. What happens if some ‘inappropriate’ website buys the domain?? Then all those people who linked to you may think you have turned into a seedy old man.
Also, you don’t want to lose your Google PageRank of 4!!!
# "Sushi"!, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Yeah. Change your name. Backstab us all.
…
Ah, it’s ok Trace. Just follow your heart!!!
# Tracey, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Ooh, I didn’t know so many people would be against changing it! Anyway, to clarify a couple of things and post a couple of replies…
Jennii - Me being on a subdomain wouldn’t restrict my access to anything, considering that BGS is only an addon domain and I already have access to the cPanel of the main account and blah blah blah. Also, AZN4LYFE.com. See, I would never have to change that domain :P
Boris - You always call me when I’m at work! Stop calling me at work!
Chans and Bryce - That’s sort of why I want to make a fast decision. I want to warn people about the name change (if it happens) and tell them to change links. And if I’m quick enough to set everything up, I can have a redirect (at least until this one expires) and Bryce - I really don’t think anyone ‘inappropriate’ is going to buy this name and I really don’t care about my pagerank. I’d actually prefer to be out of google though… But that’s another post for another day…
Alex - Ouch. That stings.
# Bryce, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Well the domain expires 22 jan, that should give you enough time to redirect. Spooky, that’s the day I’m most likely catching my plane. *x-files music*
# Helen, 1 year, 10 months ago.
1. I like BGS. But if you feel inclined towards something new, I see no harm in changing. If you reach something you’re happy with, it’ll show, and everyone will be happy.
2. Meh
3. You shouldn’t have a subdomain because they don’t sound very friendly, and they confuse me no end. I agree with what Boris said about domains showing personality… even though I don’t completely understand it all. I do know that blondie-gumby-sushie.com sort of thing looks nicer though.
4. Have those clickable smilies always been there? :)
# Tracey, 1 year, 10 months ago.
See look! A misspelling! Way to go Helen in helping me even further about the possibility of a name change! And no, they haven’t.
# Kat, 1 year, 10 months ago.
I just bought my own domain today and I was thinking about changing it from what it is (currently katlikestowrite.awardspace.com) but I decided to just keep it so it’ll be katlikestowrite.com. I don’t see why you should change it. I don’t really find it annoying but I think it’s kinda pointless. Unless of course you feel that this domain is no longer you and want another name that reflects you more :)
# Helen, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Eep, I’m sorry!
blondie-gumby-sushi.com *Repeats spelling to self*.
# Amber, 1 year, 10 months ago.
* Sometimes people feel it necessary to change their domain name. I’ve switched the name of my website before and I have to say, for me it was hard - because I was moving onto the blogging scene and changing my name too. It’s your name though and if you want to change it - go ahead.
* No, not really. Unless they change their links 10348548 times. But I don’t really tend to link to those type of sites anyway, for some reason. It only takes two seconds - tell the people who complain to stop being lazy :P!
* I’d love to have a domain because it means you have more control over your files, you know exactly what has gone wrong, and you can pester your domain company if the server is down.
* If you want to change your name - then just do it.
# Bryce, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Nerd moment: let me remind everyone that a domain ? hosting. I can take any domain name and put it on any hosting I want, paid or free. Just as I can take any subdomain (like those from afraid.org) and host it on any hosting. Having a domain just means that your hosting company takes requests from a different address.
# Rafia, 1 year, 10 months ago.
I’m all for new beginnings, I’ve never kept any of my site names, which probably wasn’t the smartest of things I’ve done. But I’m fickle, so that explains it.
If BGS no longer has any meaning to you, then perhaps you should get a new domain. If not, I see no reason why you shouldn’t renew BGS. I like it, it’s different and memorable.
But in the end, do what you want to do. I really don’t think your readers will mind changing their links. I wouldn’t. That really shouldn’t be an influence as to what you do.
# Gumby, 1 year, 10 months ago.
I like your name. Keep it. But sure, change it, showing that you hate your friends. Your best friends. That love you. But yeah, if you don’t want your name any more, go ahead and FORGET ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS.
Meh.
# Boris, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Eeehehehe, Helen’s comment made me crack up. “1. Blah blah blah sophisticated point blah blah blah. 2. Meh” Hehehehe.
Yeah, sorry about the bad phone-timing. I just have so much free time not used for working to swim around in that I don’t realise how much blood and sweat you employees pour to get some money. Ah, the life. I mean, work, yes, good on you.
Keeding…the day I do get a proper job, I bet I’m going to break, and whoever’s hiring me’ll pay me peanuts for stacking shelves. I won’t be good enough to stack stuff on shelves, just shelves.
# Jordie, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Tracey, pay more attention to Boris! *is shot*
As for your domain name… it’s up to you whether you want to change it. Back in the day I had a flair for creative domain names, but these days I just try to stick with a simple subdomain alias so the audience doesn’t get confused. Personally I think “Traceytown” has a funky ring to it. ;)
# Boris, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Traceytown. Laaawl.
# "Sushi"!, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Georgia and I sound very hostile. Just know that we DO love you, and our parents are NOT paying your parents to come over to your house for the next 3 days, so you feel somewhat socially accepted like a “normal” 15 year old girl. Meep.
# Georgia, 1 year, 10 months ago.
Moles for all. Tissues smell fresh….
Meh
# Nellie, 1 year, 10 months ago.
I am a chronic domain name changer and I have yet to have a complaint from anyone about having to change links and what not. I’m a firm believer that change is good so if you feel like a change, do it!
I just renewed harlequingirl.org for another year, but I definitely wont have any qualms about moving if I come up with a better name.
