Petty crime
Some of you may know that recently my mothers car was broken into, and this set off a mixture of emotions in me. One was an “Oh my god, there’s glass everywhere, what happened?” feeling. Another was an “Oh my god, what if we were in the car and someone smashed a window on us?” thought and another was “Why would anyone want to do something like this?”
I’m so ashamed of some people in my town. Angels have been snapped off of headstones in the local cemetaries, people have driven their cars through fences on other properties, houses and cars have been broken into repeatedly, people my age are hanging out on the streets late at night taking things I don’t ever want to see. These are what you might call “little” things, when it comes to crime, compared to murder or large scale drug trafficking but it really shocks to see it happen to you. How annoyed, angry, pissed, scared and whatever else would you feel if you came home to see your house trashed and valuables stolen? To see your loved ones headstones graffitied on?
It’s nothing I would ever be proud of, I have no idea what kind of perverse pleasure people get out of taking things from others. It’s one thing to want and need money/material items, it’s another thing to take goods from others to get your money/items. If you want something so badly, get a job and earn it. Don’t take it off someone else who has worked so hard to get what they have.

My parents had their car broken into (or tried to anyway) while it was parked across the street from their house. Also while they were on holiday someone tried to tow their other car away with a van from a garage. Luckily a neighbor asked what they were doing, they answered that they were allowed to tow it as it was broken but the neighbor still didn’t trust it and the guys left without the car. It turned out it was an old van the garage had sold and now car thieves were using it to help them in their ‘work’.
The ‘old’ (we also have a ‘new’) cemetery was vandalized here a little while back too, my dad’s grandmother and father are buried there but lucky their graves didn’t get damaged.
I will never understand why people need to vandalize or steal things. It’s much for satisfying to buy things with your own money.
BTW, you asked what books I like, usually (psychological) thrillers but any recommendations are welcome, I like to broaden my horizon :).

Shizenhowzen. *pats*
See, I don’t know why the government’s pouring all this money into stuff like the army (hello, we’re on an island miles away from any other country, who’s gonna bother coming to the arse end of the world to bomb us anyway?!) when there’s more important domestic crime issues to resolve.

That’s just disgusting. Mind you, you get idiots like that in every city. My senior school was right next to a cemetary, and I heard about older boys from a “rival” school who had grabbed a first year from my school, tied him to a gravestone and beat him up with a crowbar. I don’t understand what motivates these people either.
And ironically, if these people have anything done to them, they’re usually the ones who react with the most noise and indignation.

Wow, a disclaimer. Did they take all that food from the barbeque? Though things aren’t really too bad here compared to places like Sydney (i.e. Chinatown) right? Sure, there’s some really nasty stuff going on, but, well… Hrm, you’re right.

At my elementary school, we placed a plaque/sundial thing to commemorate the year 2000. Naturally, being a sundial, it had this big…metal-sticky-uppey-thingy (yeah, I really can’t describe it), which the local hobbledehoys LOVED breaking off over and over and over. Why? Yeah, WHO knows. I agree about not getting why people like taking things from others or even disrupting others’ property. Boo!!

Wow, that is fairly scary. I would be pretty shaken if my car/house got broken into. My neighbours said that there were a lot of car-crimes before we moved in, but nothing has happened in the six years since I’ve been here, though I haven’t breathed my sigh of relief yet.
Petty crimes may be awful, but random shootings is on the rise where I live, and my parents are always afraid I’ll be the victim of a stray bullet one day just walking on the street. Wouldn’t that be awful?
We live in a frightening society.

There are a lot of people like that in my town as well. And the litter! =_= Lordie, the litter is everywhere, it drives me mad. I just want to slap people. They dump puppies and kittens further out in the country around where my aunt and uncle live. It’s horrible. I hate the people, I don’t understand why they do it. I hope your mother’s car gets fixed.

A window got smashed on our car a few years back. We were staying at a hotel while visiting relatives and apparently there was a gun fight (O_O) in the parking lot that night and the driver’s side window got shot. Nothing was stolen, luckily. I certainly know the “OMG There’s glass everywhere!” feeling though.
I hope the insurance company isn’t stingy over your mother’s car.

I totally agree; I don’t know why some people just do those sorts of things. It doesn’t make sense to me. I’m sorry your mom’s car got broken into - my friend Paul recently got his car stereo stolen by somebody. They didn’t break the window but they screwed up his passenger-side lock so he can’t unlock it anymore. So frustrating. :S

Oh, I’m so sorry. :(
Our car was broken into a while ago too, and Dad’s briefcase with work files and other stuff was nicked, though I’m not sure what valuables the thieves thought they might find in there. I suppose they could have wanted the files, but unless the thief has some weird fetish that involves varicose veins, I doubt it! In addition, we once had the police on our lawn interviewing the neighbours about some break-ins in the street.
I, too, am disgusted by the disregard some people have for the property of others. Funnily, like Mazzie said, it’s the hooligans that cry the loudest when someone decides to pick off THEIR belongings. Figures. But what’s worse is when the insurance company decides to screw you over… oh, sure, it’s fine until something actually gets stolen or damaged, then someone has to pay up.
